Beauty Trends - Not All Good

I love watching beauty influencers and YouTubers doing their make-up. I have always found it totally mesmerising. I am so easily influenced and remember running out and buying everything Zoella talked about the first time I saw one of her videos years ago. So when the baking trend became big, I was excited… everyone was doing it and it would stop under eye creasing, it would stop my make-up sliding off and would basically solve all my life problems right? Wrong!

Baking just doesn’t work for my dry skin

For Me, This Is One Trend I Can’t Pull Off

So if you don’t know what baking is… and I am not talking about a Victoria Sponge here… it’s simply packing on powder (usually translucent) over your make-up to ‘set’ it in place. You leave it there for up to 10 minutes and then brush it off. It’s supposed to leave you creaseless and flawless. That’s what the promise is anyway. It’s often done under the eyes to hold the concealer in places and brighten up your under eye area. I tried it with a range of perfecting powders - the holy grail Laura Mercier, as well as Mac, Kylie Cosmetic, Estee Lauder. I also tried different brushes, leaving it on for different lengths of time. You name it, I tried it!

For ages, I thought I was just doing it wrong, but actually baking under my eyes actually led to fine lines being eventuated and made me look older. It makes sense, the more make-up I was packing on the more ridiculous I was looking. The reality is… trends don’t work for everyone. You can want to be like your favourite beauty blogger but really, you might just not have the same skin type.

Also - the skin under your eyes is super thin, sensitive and delicate. Is it really a good idea to be packing on so much product anyway? What happens when you have to take it all off? Now I concentrate on putting on a great eye cream (Clarins is my go-to) and dabbing on my favourite concealer which is super hydrating and I don’t feel like I am ageing prematurely throughout the day.

So just remember if there’s a new trend, by all means try it, but there’s nothing wrong with you or your skin if it doesn’t work. It’s just not for you!
